Are you kidding me? I would think the ratio for vaginal sex is 1 in 2. 1 in 1000 seems to good to be true.
It's definitely nowhere near 1 in 2 -- the worst estimates I've seen put it at 7.5% maximum per "boff" (here), and that's a worst-case scenario from an unusually grim study. Most others propose a much lower risk to the male partner, ranging from 1 in 700 to 1 in 2000 on this page. One report cited on the Google Answers page even suggests that "The transmission female to male is so small that
its [sic] only theoretical", but I'd take that with a grain of salt.
Once you have vaginal sex with an HIV infected person, you should give away all your personal belongings. It's over!
A bit too alarmist, I think. OTOH, I think there's some evidence that people of Asian (and African) descent are at higher risk, so whatever numbers you see, you might want to assume the odds are twice as bad.
