I have never liked the word, and I had no idea whether or not it was in the Oxford dictionary. It's just a nasty sounding word, as is evidenced by the fact that many use it during the spewing of "dirty words".
Maybe, as merlin pointe out, it's used to bring those that enjoy hearing or saying it to thir lowest level. Some enjoy hearing other "gutteral" sounds too.
