I would hypothesize that in the 14 years since the publication of that book (and perhaps even more since the data were collected), the popularity of anal sex has increased. Perhaps not a lot--I would not be surprised if it were still a minority preference--but more than in those days.
I suspect both porn and more upmarket sexual material, notably the book a few years ago called "The Surrender", a woman's memoir of anal sex have done a lot to normalize the practice and may be making it more popular.
