There's a big difference....
|

...in that neither heroin nor tobacco nor other controlled substances are an inherent need of the body. Yes, heroin responds to natural receptors in the body, but it is not something our bodies are born requiring like water or protein or (as the animal behaviorist Harry Harlow demonstrated a half century ago) physical closeness from a parent.
Whereas sex is an inherent drive. At the same time, it's also a drive that varies considerably from one person to another.
Bottom line: I think sex is going to be a lot harder for many people to withdraw from than heroin or other drugs, because drugs are foreign substances while sex is a natural drive. I've never been addicted to heroin, but it's my understanding that at some point the addiction can be truly kicked. Mrs. GS is a recovering alcoholic and professes to miss drinking rarely if at all. But I defy you to get her to go without sex for any extended period of time!
At the same time I think there are people who are relatively asexual and will find it relatively easy to go without. Like my ex-wife.
